Where Should I Sew My Hem Tag?

Hem Labels are a great way to give your clothing an individualized look and promote your brand. They can be placed anywhere on the clothing or other items, and we recommend putting them near areas like necklines, the sleeve hem, the pocket hem, the side seam, hood hem and the bottom hem. However, don’t feel limited by these suggestions; Hem tags work well with many different types of products so long as you find what works best in terms of placement and design aesthetics (e.g., scarves).

A. On The Neckline

Custom neck labels can be a great way to impact your brand. They're sewn upside down on the neckline, on the front of the t-shirt.

B.At The Bottom Hem

It's almost like magic how a tiny little tag can increase your t-shirt's value. All you need is one side with any designs, which will be more valuable than if there were no such thing as tags.

C. At The Sleeve Hem

The third most common position for hem label it's often found on short-sleeved t-shirts. One-sided tags work best here though if you want your design visible from both sides, then go with two-sided ones instead!

D. On The Pocket Hem

The hem label is sewn upside down, on the outer hem of the front pocket for a shirt or the back pocket for pants. The placement in front and center for a small garment label makes it stand out with style.

E. On The Outer Side Seam

The outer side seam is excellent for advertising your brand through a double-sided flag label. Your logo brand can be shown on both sides with a small label.

F. On The Hood Hem

Sewing a reversible hem tag on the hood hemm for hoodies is also very popular. Whether the hood is worn or not, the hem label plays a role in promoting your brand.

How to Determine The Hem Tag Size for My Projects?

Hem tags are a great addition to any garment or item that can be labeled. The most common size is about 1″ x 1″ (open-label is 2 “x1”). This is not fixed rule; the final size needs to be determined by your design and preferences.

Printed or Woven Hem Tags? Which Type is the Best for My Projects

There are several factors to consider when deciding whether to use custom woven or printed hem tags. Our customer service team can always help you choose the right label type for your custom hem tags.

However, we strongly recommend using damask woven for your custom hem labels. They are ideal for T-shirts, hoodies, outerwear, beanies, backpacks, and other items.

So, which type of hem tags should you choose for your cloth branding? It depends on your desires and preferences.

  • Color: The woven label can cover up to 12 colors, including the background color. If the design has more than 12 colors, digitally printed labels will be your choice when ordering labels.
  • Gradients: While this design looks great on screens or artwork, it is not ideal for woven labels. To achieve the colors accurately would require hundreds of different colored threads. There isn’t enough space within a label to make pixel-perfect patterns! However, digital print technology can make the labels look like images, just as the artwork shows.
  • Durable: Woven labels are always the most durable option. They never fade and last a protracted time. While printed labels can withstand multiple washes, the ink eventually fades over time.
  • Sewing placement: When put a label in the neck area, we recommend using cotton or satin printed labels. Because they are soft, smooth and friendly to the skin. Woven labels are more suitable for the bottom seam, and sleeve hem, pocket hem and hood hem.
  • Intricate Designs and Small Detail: Printed labels are a better choice if your design uses very thin and intricate designs.
  • Turnaround time: Printed hem tags always have a quicker turnaround time than woven labels.

5 Tips for Designing Hem Tags:

The hem label simply displays a logo or an eye-catching pattern. When designing a hem label, we recommend that you consider the following tips:

  • 1. When you sew the hem tag into the seam, the seam allowance is generally 6-7MM. You need to design the position below the seam allowance so that the label is centered or close to the fold crease. To avoid the design being damaged when sewing.
  • 2. When the stitches cross over the label’s top, the seam allowance is generally 2mm. We can now choose to design on the overall size or below the seam allowance position.
  • 3. Center fold labels are better for sewn into seams, as the rough top of the label can be hidden.
  • 4. Manhattan fold or book cover fold type will be the best for hem tags if the label is sewn on the hem and not inserted into the side seam. Manhattan fold label only folds one side, so it is usually used in the hem of the clothes. The book cover fold label folds the two ends, so the edges of the entire label are clean and soft and will not irritate the skin.
  • 5. Since the size of the hem label is usually not very big, please avoid tiny content. A distinctive logo will attract more attention and be better for branding.

How to Attach Hem Tags?

Almost all custom hem tags are sewn onto the garment or product, as this preserves the label’s soft touch. But if you’re not good at sewing or do not have a sewing machine, you can use an iron or self-adhesive to apply the label.

But be aware that if you choose to stick the label, the labels must be a straight cut. Otherwise, the folded part will cover the glue, preventing it from sticking in place.

Secondly, the durability of the label will be less than that of the sewing label because the glue on the back will slowly break down over time and eventually fall off.

According to our test, the ironed label could wash more than 20 times normal; it still maintains its original appearance and has not changed.

The back of the peel and stick label cannot be washed, which is suitable for one-time activities.
