Woven Labels are an essential accessory in garments or other products. There are 3 different types, and each has unique features you should know before choosing your woven label. But what kind of label should you choose? The following explains how to identify these differences and attributes and pick the best one for your products.

Hi, I’m the author of this post and have been in wholesale labels and hangtags for over 17 years. If you want to know anything about our products or require help please feel free to ask me at any time!

3 Types of woven labels:

Damask Woven Labels:

Damask woven labels have always been one step ahead regarding fashion trends. It is the highest density fabric label and the most popular among all woven labels, damask label can capture fine details, as well as intricate designs, and is available in unlimited sizes. Damask label is the best choice if your design is complex and has many colors. Most of our damask woven labels use 50D and 75D polyester thread, which ensures that the damask labels feel soft, luxury look, and are high-density.

Satin Woven labels:

Satin woven labels are welcomed by some high-end brands because of the silky look and the soft feel of the surface, and it has a pre-woven edge that is very skin-friendly. But it cannot capture small details like damask woven labels, and the design’s colors are not as rich as damask labels. The maximum size of the label cannot exceed 5CM.

Taffeta Woven Labels:

Taffeta woven labels with the lowest density, pixelated text, a stiff feel, and a rough appearance. You can see the separation of stitches, so it is unsuitable for fine details. They are also not a good option for inner tags, especially where the label will touch the skin, it will itch the wearer. But if you’re looking for the most economical labels, taffeta labels could be the start of the business.

Satin Woven Labels

Each of these three types of woven tags has different characteristics due to the weaving method, organization, machine, and the number of threads.

Although they have their characteristics, they still have similarities in terms of material, cutting, folding, and backing. In the following sections, we will explore their commonalities even further.

Types of yarns:

Woven labels are made up of threads, all 3 woven tags use the following 5 types of yarns:

  • Regular semi-gloss yarn: The custom woven labels with this yarn usually look matte but can be slightly reflective when moving clothing labels or under a light, looks just as polished. This yarn is usually used in over 86% of polyester woven labels. Color choices are over 3,800.
  • Shiny thread: This is a fully reflective yarn. It is an excellent alternative to satin woven labels. But it only imitates the shiny effect of satin woven labels.
  • Matte threads: These are entirely lusterless, but the colors available are limited, only black and white are in stock, and other colors need to be dyed.
  • Metallic yarn: This yarn has a metallic look and feels hard to touch, it is thicker than regular polyester yarns, so it is not ideal for woven labels with tiny details. The colors are limited, you could choose metallic gold or metallic silver, other colors need to be custom dyed.
  • Recycled polyester thread: Environmental protection and sustainable development have become a global trend, and recycled polyester yarn has also become one of the options, but only black and white are in stock.

Folds types

Fold types

All woven clothing labels apply to the 7 fold types, center fold, end fold, manhattan fold, book cover fold, mitre fold, loop fold and straight cut. If you are unfamiliar with folding, you need to check our other article to get more ideas.

Woven labels cut using heat knife or sonic laser which fuses the polyester threads together so it doesn’t matter how many times you wash them, tags will not fray!

The heat knife will cause the cut edges to be not smooth and will produce a jagged-like cut, so our damask and taffeta woven labels are ultrasonic cut to ensure skin against irritation.

The satin woven labels have two pre-woven edges, which are very friendly to the skin.

Laser cutting is usually used for die-cut, customized shapes.

Different backing & How to apply labels

In addition to sew on labels, the woven tags can also be attached with different adhesive at back to achieve the purpose of labeling. You can choose either heat (iron-on) adhesive or stick adhesive. Iron on label is the most selected type which can be easily attached by using a heat press eventually, once you master the appropriate temperature, pressure, and time.

Still hard to make a decision on which types. Check the following chart:
